Red Dress Stories MB
Red Dress Stories MB is an evergreen memorial sharing the stories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people across Manitoba.

Through stories, place, and remembrance, the project honours those who have been lost while helping communities better understand the ongoing impact of the MMIWG2S+ crisis.
Why This Project Exists
Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ relatives are disproportionately targeted for violence, with rates of homicide over three times higher than among non-Indigenous peoples.

According to Statistics Canada data from 2021, approximately half of all homicide victims in Manitoba were Indigenous (David and Jaffray, 2022). Nearly half of Indigenous victims were women or girls. This was the third highest rate in Canada, and significantly higher than the national average. Winnipeg had the highest rate of Indigenous homicide victims across all urban centres in Canada.

Women and girls are disproportionately represented compared with men among youth and children, as well as victims in older age groups. Despite making up only 5% of the female population in 2021, Indigenous women and girls accounted for 21% of all gender-related homicides that year. Manitoba had the second highest rate (Sutton, 2023).

This project also aims to capture unreported MMIWG2S+ stories and cases from communities.
